Eating manners in Islam

YA AHLAN WA SAHLAN!! (HELLO AND WELCOME!!)

Don't these look soo appetizing? :(

In Surah Al An ’am verse 121 Allah (SWT) says,

“And do not eat of that upon which the name of Allah has not been mentioned, for indeed, it is grave disobedience. And indeed, do the devils inspire their allies [among men] to dispute with you. And if you were to obey them, indeed, you would be associators [of others with Him].”

1. Reciting the name of Allah (SWT):

As the first Ayah signifies the vital beginning and commencement of a meal. It tells us to adhere to 2 things at the beginning of having any meal:

1. Being grateful to Allah SWT for its provision.

2. To recite Allah (SWT)'s blessed name.

Whatever the occasion, everyone enjoys a scrumptious meal. Be it, a fancy occasion where we like to gobble a handful of those dippy sweet gulab jamun or just a normal Tuesday evening in the kitchen whisking an egg and an almost round roti. Not to target my sweet sisters including me who tried hard to perfect a round roti, we all have been there so no worries TuT (cry emoji*)

2. Wash those pretty hands:

We are instructed to remain clean in our religion at all times and what better way than wudoo (Ablution).

Narrated Nu’am Al-Mujmir:

Once I went up the roof of the mosque, along with Abu Huraira. He performed ablution and said, “I heard the Prophet saying, “On the Day of Resurrection, my followers will be called “Al-Ghurr-ul-Muhajjalun” from the trace of ablution and whoever can increase the area of his radiance should do so (i.e. by performing ablution regularly).”[Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 4, Number 138]

Abu Hurayrah (R.A) said, “Whoever can increase the area of his radiance should do so.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

With this, another question pops up in many people's minds that what if we have a doubt in our wudoo during prayer. About this matter, the Prophet had advised the following,

Narrated `Abbas bin Tamim: My uncle asked Allah's Apostle about a person who imagined to have passed wind during the prayer. Allah' Apostle replied: He should not leave his prayers unless he hears sound or smells something.

3. Etiquettes:

We are advised to use 3 fingers while having a meal with our hands (as the Prophet PBUH did)

Ka’b bin Malik (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I saw Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) eating with three fingers (i.e., the thumb, the index finger and the middle finger) and licking them after having finished the food. [Muslim].

What is a better way that to earn a bonus while doing something as routinely as eating food? To earn extra brownie points and blessings is to incorporate the Seerah of the Prophet (PBUH) in our daily activities such as eating with hands using the 3 mentioned fingers.

4. What if you don't like your meal?

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ ate moderately when there was food available and never has it been recorded him mentioning not liking any food. If there was something he would not as he would just not eat it, but never speak ill. This should be a lesson for all the finicky eaters whom Allah SWT has blessed with an abundance of food to choose from.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet never criticized any food (he was invited to) but he used to eat if he liked the food, and leave it if he disliked.

5. Finally, the brownie points!!

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)'s favorite foods:

* Dates:

The Prophet (PBUH) used to have seven dates every single day. According to a hadith:

He who eats seven ‘Ajwa dates every morning, will not be affected by poison or magic on the day he eats them. (Al Bukhari 5445)

* Figs:

Figs are one of the fruits of Paradise and was favored by the Prophet (PBUH) as well. They tend to be a good cure for stomach ailments, piles, gout diseases and strengthen bones in the human body as they contain a lot of nutrients and antioxidants.

* Meat:

According to the Prophet (PBUH), meat is the king of foods as it is full of protein and minerals like Zinc, Iron etc. Whenever it was available, The Prophet (PBUH) enjoyed it.

* Honey:

The Prophet (PBUH) said:

Healing is in three things: cupping, a gulp of honey or cauterization. (Bukhari 5681)

* Olive Oil:

The Prophet (PBUH) said:
Eat of its oil and use it (the olives), for indeed it is from a blessed tree. (Tirmidhi 1852)

* Barley:
You must be well-aware of how commonly we can find porridge's, meals and acai bowls rich with barley. To dig more into its benefits, here is a hadeeth.

“The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) entered upon us, and with him was ‘Ali bin Abu Talib, who had recently recovered from an illness. We had bunches of unripe dates hanging up, and the Prophet (PBUH) was eating from them. ‘Ali reached out to eat some, and the Prophet (PBUH) said to ‘Ali:

Stop, O ‘Ali! You have just recovered from an illness.

I made some greens and barley for the Prophet (PBUH), and the Prophet (PBUH) said to ‘Ali:
O ‘Ali, eat some of this, for it is better for you. (Ibn Majah 4:3442)

* Melon:

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to eat melon with fresh dates, and he used to say:

The heat of the one is broken by the coolness of the other, and the coolness of the one by the heat of the other. (Abu Dawud 3836)

Other foods like Grapes, Meat and Pumpkin are also The Prophet (PBUH)'s favorite.

The bulk of such contents are not included in our diet anymore. Instead, so many present unhealthy options have diverted our taste buds to newer unhealthy options that are leading us towards innumerable health issues. Being a medical student, it is routinely to come across life-threatening diseases like diabetes, obesity, electrolyte and hormonal imbalances including many more to be associated with unhealthy diets 90% of the time.

Our bodies are also an amanah from Allah (SWT) hence it is up to us to feed it with the best items that He has blessed us with and what better way than to follow the golden and ultimate example of our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
